L. H. Winter

A. Köwing in seinem 17.

Louis H. Winter, who currently serves as the pastor of these congregations [Bem, Laduc, & Champion City, Missouri], was born on 13 August 1876 in the northern part of Warren County, Missouri, and as the first-born was blessed by his devout mother's prayers to the Lord, and it is because of their influence that the son now labors as a minister in the vineyards of the Lord.  His parents later joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and he himself was brought to God in his 17th year through a lasting meeting held by Brother A. Köwing.  Responding to God's calling to serve Him in the ministry, he earned the means to be able to attend college to further his education, and in his 22nd year entered Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Missouri.  Now in his last year of study, the Church has sent him to his current field of activity in order to win souls for his Master.

The book from which this brief sketch and photograph were taken did not explicitly identify when it was published; inference must be made from internal clues. I believe the date of publication was 1905.

For some reason, however, no mention is made of Louis Heinrich Hermann Winter's marriage to Allovine A. Luelf on 9 November 1904 at Truxton, Lincoln County, Missouri.

The extent of Louis Winter's responsibilities as pastor of the three congregations comprising the Bem Circuit was spelled out on pages 296-299. All of them were in their "infancy" and no doubt needed much attention from Rev. Winter.

St. Louis German Conference
German Methodist Episcopal Church

Michel. Trustees: [I. or J.] H. Uthmann, Bernhard Otte und Wm. Landwehr.

Louis H. Winter steht. Die Gliederzahl beträgt gegenwärtig 30 Personen.

Als Verwalter dienen Paul Matthias und W. Krause, als Trustees: H. Krause, Chas. Brandhorst, John Michel, Wm. Poth und A. Löb.

Bem District, Mo.

In 1893, Brother Guido Bollner, then stationed in Owensville, Mo., began missionary work in the neighborhood of Champion City in Franklin Co., Mo. He held his meetings for a time in an evangelical church, and later, when access to the church was denied to him, twice weekly in a private house. This conscientious work was not without success, and around June 1893 a congregation of 16 mbers was organized, which soon established its own house of worship, consecrated to the service of the Lord in 1894. The faithful Brother G. Böllner was appointed Brother G. L. Zocher as an assistant, who during the week helped with the construction of the church and on Sundays assisted with spreading the Word. These brothers were followed by D. Fröschle as pastor with O. M. Brinkmann as assistant. Their successors were Brother C. E. Baumgarten, together with an assistant, W. A. Dahlem; the former had three and the latter two preaching places under his charge. In 1891, Brother H. W. Köwing, stationed at Owensville, Mo., served this field of labor, but the many preaching places, as well as the distance between each of them, made a successful processing on the part of a single person impossible and consequently at the next Conference the charge was re-configured and three communities, Bem, Laduc, and Champion City, were assigned as a field of labor to Brother Louis H. Winter, one of our theological students in Warrenton, Mo., who is currently serving there. The growth in Champion City was never large, and the congregation has suffered from the frequent withdrawal of members.

The current officials are: Administrator: George Eßmann, Christian. Michel. Trustees: [I. or J.] H. Uthmann, Bernhard Otte, and Wm. Landwehr. The congregation maintains a Sunday school of some 30 pupils with Brother Georg Eßmann as superintendent at the head.

The Bem Immanuels congregation was founded by Brother Guido Böllner in 1894. Five families formed the kernel and purchased the English church. The church currently has 22 members and the board consists of Brothers Albert Kottwitz and August Stückbrocker as administrators and August Otte, Hermann Stritzle and August Stückbrocker as trustees. A Sunday school of 25 pupils with Henry Merk as superintendent is also associated with the congregation.

The congregation at Laduc owes its origin next to God to the faithful work of Brother Guido Böllner, who organized it in 1893 and purchased the property of the church, which was used by the English and Germans together for their divine purposes. After the division of the Owensville District, this preaching place was connected with Bland, Mo. The preachers G. L. Zocher, F. [I. or J.] Sternberg and H. Miller served them in sequence. Only a year ago, Laduc was annexed to the Bem district, which is now under the charge of Brother Louis H. Winter. The number of members is currently 30 people.

The administrators are Paul Matthias and W. Krause; as Trustees: H. Krause, Chas. Brandhorst, John Michel, Wm. Poth and A. Löb. A Sunday school with about 45 pupils, headed by Brother P. Matthias as a superintendent, is connected with the church.
