The date "Jul 1891." was stamped on the back of this photo and someone has written: "Selma + Gene." This is undoubtedly a reference to Selma Anna Gerber, age 4, and Eugene Adolph Gerber, age 2.
Their older brother, George August Gerber, had died within a month of his birth in 1886.
Selma and Gene may not have known at the time this photo was taken that their mother was pregnant with another child. Brother Louis August would join them in January 1892.
