    •      Christian Etling enlisted on 2 September 1861 at St. Louis in the First Regiment, US Reserve Corps, Missouri Infantry, serving in Company H under Captain Leonard. He entered as a Corporal and left service with the rank of Sergeant. He was discharged on 23 June 1862 at St. Louis because of an inguinal hernia.

      "Mr. Etling was born in Allsfeld, Germany, October 13, 1840, and with his parents emigrated to St. Louis in 1846. He was educated in the public schools here." From an undated and unidentified [St. Louis?] newspaper clipping in the possession of the Gerber family of St. Louis, Missouri. The complete text is available in the notes for Benjamin's death.

      Copy of a U.S. Army Certificate of Disability for Discharge. According to the upper portion of the certificate completed at Glencoe, St. Louis County, Missouri on 2 June 1862 by the Company Commander, "Christian Etling a Sargt of Captain Leonard Weindel Company, H, of the first Regiment of United States U S R C was enlisted by Capt. Leonard Weindel, of the first Regiment of U S R C at St. Louis Mo. on the second day of Septmeber 1861, to serve three years; he was born in Alsfeld, in the State of Hessian, is fifty-eight years of age, five feet ten inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, gray hair, and by occupation when enlisted a Potter.
           Charles Ludwig, Surgeon, certified that Christian Etling was "incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of inguinal hernia, of the left side."
           Christian Etling was discharged on 23 June 1862 at St. Louis, Missouri.

Gerber swore that on 21 October 1875 they saw "Christian Etling the testator make his mark as and for his signature" on his last will; and that Christian Etling died on or about 25 October 1875.
