    • Adelheid would have been about 11 or 12 years old at the time. According to family tradition, one of her infant siblings died of cholera during the voyage of emigration. In order to avoid a burial at sea, the mother hid the child's body in a trunk until the family reached land. The Kiefers landed in New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi River to Commerce, Missouri. Shortly thereafter, Adelheid's mother also died of cholera, and was buried in New Hamburg, Missouri. The family eventually settled on a farm between New Hamburg and Oran.
