           "Sergt. Eugene A. Gerber of 1616 Potomac street sent a letter home in which he says he expects to leave for France at almost any hour. He is with the 8th Coast Company, Signal Corps, England. His brother, Louis A. Gerber, has been with the Headquarters Detachment in France for some time. In his letter he stated that he had formed a band of which he is a bugler."

Served overseas from 13 March 1918 to 11 December 1918. Honorably discharged. This information previously (30 May 2002) available at the Missouri World War I Military Service Cards Database (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/ww1/). The assignment of an age of 18 years and 5 months in the database is incorrect. Eugene was born 11 July 1889. At the time of his induction, he would have been just short of 28 years and 5 months old.

           An adjacent notice on the same page of this fragment of newspaper reads: "Little Evelyn Erard, 5 years old, died Sunday morning. The funeral took place Wednesday, May 15, from the residence, 1820 Arsenal street, to new St. Marcus Cemetery."
