Immigration:
Family history recounts that one of Joseph and Barbara (Klaus) Kiefer's infant children died of cholera during the voyage of emigration. Barbara, desiring to bury her baby on land, hid the corpse in a trunk until the family arrived in the USA. The Kiefers landed in New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi River to Commerce, Missouri. Shortly thereafter, Barbara also died of cholera, and was buried in New Hamburg, Missouri. The family eventually settled on a farm between New Hamburg and Oran.

Joseph married Klaus, Barbara Germany. Barbara was born Abt 1824, Germany; died Abt 1856, Scott County, Missouri, USA. [Group Sheet]
