    According to an 1885 biographical sketch of his son-in-law, Herman H. Bierbaum, C. H. Schaaf owned and operated a grist mill (at first powered by horse, then by ox and finally by steam) in Warren County, Missouri. In 1860, he sold his mill to Herman H. Bierbaum and went on to establish a new mill at Augusta, St. Charles County, Missouri, which he sold to his sons in 1873.
