Census:

     According to the 1910 U.S. enumeration, Arthur Oberwortmann, age 8, attending school, lived on the family-owned farm headed by his parents, John Oberwortmann, age 50, and Annie Oberwortmann, age 46. They had been married for 29 years and had given birth to nine children, seven of whom were still alive (and six were living in the home). The other five siblings with whom Arthur lived were: Albert Oberwortmann, age 26, working full-time on the farm; Elfrida [sic] Oberwortmann, age 21; Deola Oberwortmann, age 14, attending school; Ester [sic] Oberwortmann, age 12, attending school; and, Olga Oberwortmann, age 6. Also living in the home were two hired hands: Hugo Laboube, age 19; and, Henry Willer, age 37.

Census:

     According to the 1920 U.S. enumeration, Arthur Oberworthman [sic], age 18, lived on the family-owned farm on Lower Bottom Road with his father, Louis Oberworthman [sic], age 62, and three of his siblings: Deola Oberworthman [sic], age 24; Ester [sic] Oberworthman [sic], age 21; and, Olga Oberworthman [sic], age 16 and attending school. Louis' wife, and the mother of the children, was not included as a member of the household.

Census:

     According to the 1940 U.S. enumeration, the household on a family-owned farm was headed by Arthur Oberwortmann, age 38 and single. The farm was valued at $3,000. Of the nine other farming households enumerated on 1 & 2 May and listed on that sheet of the census, only three were owned by the households living on the property and they were valued at $1,000 to $1,800. The remaining six were being rented at $5 to $6 per month.
     Arthur had worked 66 hours during the week of 24-30 March 1940. In 1939, he had worked all 52 weeks of the year, but had earned $0 in wages or salary. However, he had received $50 or more from other unidentified sources.
     Also living in the household were Arthur's two single sisters, Deola (age 43) and Olga (age 36). According to the definitions accepted by the census, they had no occupations, had not worked any hours in 1939 or during the week of 24-30 March 1940, had not been seeking employment, and had not received any income, either from wages or other unidentified sources. It was recognized that they were engaged in "home housework" but their sort of labor did not receive any classification.
     J. F. Louis Oberwortmann, an 81 year old widower and the father of the three other Oberwortmanns also lived in the household. He had been schooled through the 8th grade. He also had not worked in 1939 or more recently. He had not received any wages in 1939, but did have income of $50 or more from other unidentified sources.
     And finally, there was Harvey Schowe, age 19 and single. He had ended his schooling after the eighth grade and was now employed as a hired laborer. During the week of 24-30 March 1940 he had worked 66 hours. In 1939, he had labored 46 weeks and had been paid $350 in wages. He had no other source of income that year.
     All five people had been members of the same household in the same location on 1 April 1935.

Arthur was buried in a family plot in Saint Johns Cemetery, just south of Berger, Franklin County, Missouri. Also on the family memorial marker are the names of his parents: "J. F. Louis 1858-1956" and "Annie S. 1863-1935", and two of his siblings: "Deola C. 1896-1954" and "Olga K. 1904-1992".

     According to information on his death certificate, John Frank Louis Oberwortmann was born outside the city limits of Berger, Missouri, a child of F. W. Oberwortmann and Christina Schroeder.
     According to information on the Find A Grave memorial page for "J. F. Louis Oberwortmann", Christine Schroeder's first marriage had been to a man named Fallenbeck.

     According to the 1940 U.S. enumeration, J. F. Louis Oberwortmann, age 81 and a widower, was a resident of the family-owned farm headed by his son Arthur Oberwortmann. The farm was valued at $3,000.      Also living in the household were two of Louis's single daughters, Deola (age 43) and Olga (age 36). Died:

     According to information on his death certificate, John Frank Louis Oberwortmann died at 8:10 a.m. on 15 October 1956 at his home, two miles east of Berger, Missouri, at the age of 98 years. He had been a resident of rural Berger for all of his life.
     The cause of death was pneumonia, contracted about three to four days before death. His health had also been challenged for 20 years by general arteriosclerosis.

John married Helmendach, Anna Sophia 25 Jan 1881, Berger, Franklin County, Missouri, USA. Anna was born 20 Apr 1863, Berger, Franklin County, Missouri, USA; died 14 Nov 1935, Boeuf Township, Franklin County, Missouri, USA; was buried 17 Nov 1935, Berger, Franklin County, Missouri, USA. Birth:

     According to information on her death certificate, Annie Sophia Oberwortmann was born on [20?] April 1863 at Berger, Missouri, the child of Chas. Helmendach and Caroline Langenduerfer. The date of birth may also be 30 April. This is an item which requires further research.

Buried:

     According to information on her death certificate, it is not clear where Annie Sophia Oberwortmann was to be buried. Other sources report that she was buried in a family plot in Saint Johns Cemetery, just south of Berger, Franklin County, Missouri. Also on the family memorial marker are the names of her husband, "J. F. Louis 1858-1956", and three of their children: "Deola C. 1896-1954", "Arthur O. 1901-1986" and "Olga K. 1904-1992".

Died:

     According to information on her death certificate, Annie Sophia Oberwortmann died at 8:15 a.m. at the age of 72 years, 6 months, 14 days. The cause of death was cerebral apoplexy. Her doctor had last attended her on 25 October 1935.

     According to marriage records in Franklin County, Missouri, "Mr. J. F. Louis Oberwortmann," and "Miss Anna Sophia Helmenday [sic]," both of Berger, Franklin County, Missouri, were married on 25 January 1881 by F. W--ning, "Minister of the Gospel" and the "ordained Minister of the evangelical St. Johns [sic] Church at Berger." The exact place of marriage was not explicitly mentioned. The marriage certificate was filed and recorded on 11 February 1881.

     According to the 1900 U.S. enumeration, the household living on a farm consisted of Louis Oberwortman, head of household, age 42, a farmer who owned his own farm; and, Annie S. Oberwortman, wife, age 37. They had been married for 19 years; five of their 7 children were still living. Those five children were: Lydia L. Oberwortman, age 18; Albert J. Oberwortman, age 16, working on the farm when not attending school; Alfredia S. Oberwortman, age 12, attending school; Annie D. C. Oberwortman, age 4; and, Esther C. M. Oberwortman, age 2. Also living in the household was Fritz Oether, a 51 year old widow working as a farm laborer. Born in Germany in 1849, he immigrated to the USA in 1881 and was a naturalized citizen.
